“You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
— Marcus Aurelius
There are a number of quotes out there that point us in the direction of self-directed change: “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” “Grant me the courage to the change the things I can,” “If you change yourself, you have already started to change the world.” And these are just the ones off the top of my head. Yet even with these wise words in the back of our heads, we still find ourselves making the mistake of exerting energy on fixing the “out there.”
We fall in love with the promise of outside change because it looks easier, the results seem more tangible, and frankly it’s a cultural norm to make the mistake of believing we have control over things and people. This illusion of control provides an illusion of security that the personality requires in order to function. The truth, “we control nothing and no one and anything can happen at any time and most likely will,” is daunting and scary; and who really wants to deal with all of that?
But when we are able to meet that truth with a practice that inspires equanimity, compassion, and strength of character then we know that no matter the circumstances that arise in the world we are more than prepared and capable of dealing with them all.
May you own your power over the mind.
