One Quote, One Card — “Strength and Growth”

“Strength and growth comes only through continues effort and struggle.”

— Napoleon Hill

“You express untold truths”
Walking Path: Perceptive
Sleeping Path: Repressed, subdued

“One quote, one card” has been a part of my practice for a couple of years now and it never ceases to amaze me how often the random card drawn speaks so clearly to the whatever quote (usually Rumi) I’m studying. So of course I was not surprised when this card turned over in response to the quote above. It’s perfect.

The only thing I know about this Napoleon Hill person is the the quote posted above (gathered from a random Google search for “quote of the day”) but this is what I gather from what was said: He’s been fooled.

In the same way we’ve all been fooled into thinking that the masculine, capitalistic ideals will somehow save us or make us better people. If we’re just strong enough, or work hard enough, or try try try, then surely we’ll reach those goals! He’s talking about “strength and growth” as if they are commodities to be earned and gathered. Strength and grown come through living — and yes, sometimes Life is struggle and effort; but just as much Life is sitting back, going with the flow, and allowing the work you’ve done to take hold.

I’m reminded of a story I read about Serena Williams’ training regimen. She would work out every day and of course have great gains. But then someone told her to schedule in some rest days, some do almost nothing days, and next thing you know her gains exponentially increased.

Jesus said “Look at the lillies of the field and how they grow, they do not work or make their clothing.”

The wise person knows there is a time for effort and a time for rest. The wiser person knows that That which grows the flowers is also growing me — what fuss do I need to make over things?

May you be wise this week. Work hard when you must — sit back with your feet up when you can.

I was at a martial art class with my children and noticed a sign with a quote that stuck with me. “No man ever achieved worth-while success who did not, at one time or other, find himself with at least one foot hanging well over the brink of failure.” Napoleon Hill. – I’ve referred back to it many times over my life.
