As Master Tenno was dying, he called to his room the monk in
charge of food and clothing in the temple.
When the monk sat
down by the bed, Master Tenno asked,
“Do you understand?”
“No,” the monk replied.
Tenno, picking up his pillow, hurled it through the window,
and fell back dead.
This was taken from the book “Graceful Exits” (great bedside reading). Zen masters are always making a point, apparently even in death. But I have been pondering on this story for the better part of a year and have yet to come up with the slightest clue. So, what about you?
