A long time ago, in a land far away from New Jersey, I used to sing this song in the church choir. Some songs, some sermons, some scriptures, just stick with us for all of our lives. This is why I remain eternally grateful for the religious instruction of my upbringing, no matter how limiting or constricting it may have been. I was given a solid base of information to grow from.
Anyway, this is one of those songs that finds its way into my spirit from time to time. It says “Everyday is a day of thanksgiving. God’s been So Good to me…Everyday He’s blessing me. Take the time to glorify the Lord today.”
Allow me to spend some time with these words.
Everyday is a day of thanksgiving
It’s easy to get caught up in the bad day struggle. Monday’s are no good, but Fridays are the bomb. The middle of Winter sucks, but when Springtime comes, it’s On! Yes with a capital O. But the truth is, when seen from a Divine place, Everyday provides its benefits and its boons. The only thing that judges one day from the next happens within our minds, and the criteria is different from one person to the next. Our minds and our Ego creates these standards for what is a “good day” and what is not which takes us away from what our spirit and our heart is always singing: Everyday is a day of Thanksgiving.
God’s been so good to me
It’s too easy to get caught up in the struggles of our lives. It takes a strong commitment to beauty and dancing to see for ourselves that we’ve got it made. When you consider that for every hardship and problem and tear you’ve cried, Life has brought you through and usually you’re better off having been tried. Even in the midst of our worse pain, Life is already preparing a the celebration of our triumph. At All Times! This is how good Life is to us. The 23 Psalm says it better than I ever could: “The Lord is my Shepard, I shall not want,” and “thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” When has this ever not been the case? Think for yourself, look over your life and consider how your struggle uplifted you, how you were safe before you even comprehended there was light at the end of the tunnel.
Everyday He’s blessing me
There’s a difference between Life being good to us on a daily basis and Life BLESSING us on a daily basis. The baseline for Life’s goodness is deliverance from struggle and our mental and physical faculties. We are constantly being given more than our fair share, more than we’ve earned, more than we will ever understand. Again, in order to recognize the enormity of these blessings, it takes a certain mindset and a very strong commitment to loving Life. The Ego is fixated on what’s wrong, what’s negatively affecting it, or how to fix things. But the Divine place in us sits quietly and knows that we are blessed beyond comprehension, that All is Well, that Life has it all under control. Everyday.
Take the time to Glorify the Lord Today
Like energy attracts like energy. If you take the time to give thanks constantly, you will receive more reasons to be thankful. When you praise Life, you will consistently reap praiseworthy benefits. The opposite of this is also true, so be careful where you allow your attention to settle. Focusing on what’s wrong with your world only creates an energy of discord, providing your Ego with more ammunition for fooling your senses into discontentment. So whenever possible, return your thoughts to what is good, and beautiful and beneficial…then dance a lil bit. A quick two-step in the grocery store aisle or a chair shimmy has never hurt anybody.
We are blessed Over and Over. This is a good thing to remember today and in every minute we have breath.
