I began this discussion by describing the 40 day sadhana I implemented in order to gain a better understanding of how I can live this carnal existence while trying to reach spiritual goals. Part two of this discussion detailed how that practice was parlayed into an actual answer to my original question. I was so excited! But just as I thought I was done defining what it meant to strive for enlightenment while enjoying the pleasures of living, my soul mate did her job and pushed me a little further:
“So what does that look like for you?”
Que Grosero! I was just happy to have received an actual answer this time. But now that the seed was planted, I had to find a way to describe what it would look like if I were striving for enlightenment even in the most carnal of settings. So whether I’m playing DnD, drinking at the bar, or tanning by the pool (oh spring, wherefore art thou?), how would I be able to measure my focus on enlightenment?
I answered her that night, the best way I could:
“When I’m Loving every moment, standing in Allowance in every moment, and speaking Gratitude in every moment, regardless of the circumstance. That’s what it looks like for me.”
I’ve had trouble writing part 3, the words just would not come. But yesterday I stumbled upon a note I had left myself almost TWO YEARS AGO that simply said “1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18.”
I went to discover what foolishness I was involved in two years ago to leave such a note, only to discover that my Higher Self has been waiting on me to catch up to It for at least that long. It reads:
“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances…”
I was stunned, flabbergasted, and taken aback. You mean I’ve known the answer all along and went through all of this just to discover what I knew two years ago?
“Be Joyful Always” – Loving Every Moment.
Look at everyone and everything as if I am in love with it all. Develop soft eyes of appreciation for the existence of all things and all people. My beautiful life is the result of everyone’s work and struggle. This is love.
“Pray continually” – Allowing every moment.
I think it is significant that in Jesus’ two most remembered prayers (“The Lord’s Prayer” and “The Garden of Gethsemane”) he is sure to let it be known that he is surrendered to the will of his father. “Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven,” and “Not my will, but Thy Will be done.” This is constant prayer to me, allowing the will of the universe to unfold perfectly without my silly desires and frustrations getting in the way. This is an active way of being, you cannot be passively surrendered. You must attend to it, work at it, and infuse it with all of your energy.
“Give Thanks in all Circumstances” – Speaking Gratitude.
I know I am close to being aligned with Truth when I can speak my gratitude in every situation I find myself. I give thanks to everyone I come across: the toll booth operator, the grocery store clerk, the cable guy, and myself…constant thanksgiving.
So that is how I am able to live Hedonistically and Spiritually: L.A.G.
This is where I am on this path. I know full well it will change as I change but as for now, I love being here.
